What is a pocket park, and could it work in Terre Haute? Pocket parks are small public or semi-public green spaces, typically less than a quarter acre, designed to bring recreation and relaxation into urban neighborhoods. They are often created from vacant or underused lots and provide accessible places for residents to gather, picnic, or play without requiring large amounts of land. In Terre Haute, many parcels owned by the Department of Redevelopment are too small to meet the minimum size required for new residential construction. Unless neighboring parcels can be combined, these lots remain vacant and must still be maintained by the city. The City is moving forward with small-scale green space improvements through the Terre Haute Green Pockets initiative. The project is supported by $177,823 in federal funds from the Inflation Reduction Act, awarded through the Indiana DNR Community & Urban Forestry Department and the USDA U.S. Forest Service, with funding focused on tree planting and expanding urban green space. Repurposing these unbuildable parcels as pocket parks would transform idle land into functional community spaces. Development will be achieved at minimal cost through collaboration between city departments, municipal partners, and available state grant programs.
