Firefighter Lucas Diaz will mark his third anniversary with the City of Cocoa Fire Department this November. Since joining the department, Diaz has built strong bonds and found a sense of camaraderie he describes as a second family in Brevard County.

Diaz and his crew begin each day with equipment checks, station maintenance and ongoing training to ensure readiness. Their duties are interspersed with meal planning, during which Diaz works alongside talented firehouse chefs, often discussing calls from across the city.

Diaz finds the unpredictable nature of emergency response engaging. The sound of tones and sirens signals a familiar call to action, with each response presenting unique challenges. However, he finds the deepest meaning in serving with his colleagues and helping others.

"Regardless of how busy or challenging a shift may be, my coworkers and supervisors find a way to laugh and smile," Diaz said. "Being able to serve the community while working alongside a group of people who genuinely care about each other and the job is something I don’t take for granted."

Diaz, a Florida native who grew up in Port St. John, felt a strong pull to serve Cocoa. He takes pride in protecting an area close to home, from historic downtown to the Indian River. His commitment extends beyond emergency calls. He has participated in city public education videos on hurricane and disaster preparedness. Following hurricanes, he has joined fellow firefighters in cleanup efforts at Crosswinds.

"Sometimes it’s educating people before an emergency happens, and sometimes it’s simply showing up afterward, rolling up your sleeves, and helping your neighbors recover," Diaz explained.

Outside of his duties, Diaz enjoys fishing, spending time with his family and sharing stories. He is fluent in English and Spanish and has an identical twin brother.
