Strong Storm with 50 MPH Winds Approaching Abilene Area
A strong thunderstorm bringing wind gusts up to 50 mph is moving through Jones, Shackelford, Taylor, and Callahan counties; seek shelter if outdoors. (NWS San Angelo TX)
Residents in Jones, Shackelford, Taylor, and Callahan counties should be aware of a strong thunderstorm moving through the area. The National Weather Service (NWS) San Angelo TX issued a Special Weather Statement at 11:19 PM CDT, September 30, warning of wind gusts up to 50 mph.
At 11:18 PM CDT, Doppler radar indicated the storm was over Tye, moving east at 50 mph. The NWS advises that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. If you are outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building.
Locations impacted include Abilene, Clyde, Baird, Tye, Hawley, View, Hamby, Caps, Dyess AFB, Potosi, Impact, McCarty Lake, Lake Fort Phantom Hill, US-283 Near The Callahan-Shackelford County Line, Hodges, Kirby Lake, and Stith. This also includes Interstate 20 between Mile Markers 272 and 310.
This Special Weather Statement is effective until 12:00 AM CDT, October 1. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect for west central Texas until midnight CDT.
