Bus Safety Program PSA

Bus Safety Program PSA What Happens If You Illegally Pass a Stopped School Bus in Miami-Dade County? All school buses that transport Miami-Dade County Public Schools students are equipped with safety technology, including stop-arm enforcement cameras. Cameras on the side of school buses help capture violation events and vehicle license plate numbers. Law enforcement officers will review camera footage of violations and issue citations to a vehicle's registered owner unless the automobile is proven stolen during the offense. If someone other than the vehicle's owner was driving at the time, the owner can request a transfer of liability. The fine for illegally passing a stopped school bus is $225 in Florida. If a school bus camera captures the evidence, a civil violation carries no points against a motorist's driving record. If witnessed by a police officer, the citation is $570 with three points on the driver's license. In other communities, the BusPatrol safety program has reduced illegal passing's by 30% year-over-year. In addition, 95 percent of drivers do not contest their citations after seeing video evidence of their violation. When To Stop for Stopped School Bus in Florida State Law requires motorists to  STOP when approaching a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing and stop-arm extended. Motorists may not proceed until the stop arm is retracted. On two-lane and multi-lane roadways:All drivers moving in either direction on a two-way street or a highway divided by a paved median must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal and remain stopped until the road is clear of children AND the school bus stop arm is withdrawn. On multi-lane roadways divided by a median:The only time traffic approaching an oncoming school bus does not need to stop is if there is a raised barrier such as a concrete divider or at least five feet of unpaved space separating the lanes of traffic. On a highway divided by a raised barrier or an unpaved median at least 5 feet wide, drivers moving in the opposite direction do not have to stop for the bus  (painted lines or pavement markings are not considered barriers). However, these motorists should slow down and watch for students loading or unloading from the bus. School Bus Safety Tips for Motorists When approaching a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing and its stop-arm extended, motorists must STOP in nearly every instance. Be alert and watch for children at all times, especially near schools, bus stops, buses, and school parking lots. Obey all traffic laws and speed limits, paying extra attention to the lower speed limits in school zones. Do not pass other vehicles in school zones or at crosswalks. Do not change lanes or make U-turns in school zones. Watch for and obey signals from school crossing guards. Do not text or use a cell phone while driving. Only drive or park in authorized areas to drop off or pick up children at school. School Bus Safety Tips for Students Parents and students: Please discuss these safety tips together and be sure to follow them: Discuss and practice the safest way to get to and from school or the assigned school bus stop. Never run out into the street or cross between parked cars. At the School Bus Stop: Arrive at the bus stop about five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Follow instructions from your bus driver or the school district about where to wait at your assigned bus stop. Wait in a safe place away from the road. Do not run and play while waiting for the bus to arrive. Never sit on the roadway while waiting for your bus. Never speak to strangers at the bus stop, and never get into the car with a stranger. Always tell your parents, the bus driver, or another responsible adult as soon as possible if a stranger tries to talk to you or pick you up. Loading or Unloading from the Bus: As the bus approaches, watch for the red flashing lights and the stop arms to extend. When the bus stops, wait for the driver s signal that it is safe to cross the road or board the bus. If crossing the street, look left, right, and left again. When the driver signals that it is safe, walk at least 12 feet in front of the bus. where the driver can see you. Never walk behind the school bus. Never run after the bus. Hold the handrail while going up and down the stairs. Go directly to your bus seat and remain seated during the ride. Exit the bus only at your assigned bus stop. If you drop something near the bus, tell the bus driver. Never try to pick it up first because the driver may not be able to see you. Parents or guardians of small children should wait with them in the morning and meet them at the bus stop in the afternoon. Riding in the School Bus: Keep hands, arms, and heads inside the bus. Always buckle up properly. All MDCPS buses have safety belts. Stay in your seat and obey the driver. Remain seated at all times and keep the aisle clear. Stop talking and remain silent when the bus comes to a railroad crossing so the driver can hear if a train is approaching. Avoid loud or disruptive behavior that could distract the bus driver from safely operating the bus. Be courteous and respectful to your driver. Safely getting you to and from school is a tremendous responsibility the driver takes very seriously. Spiritual Life

Spiritual Life Chapel Each week, students gather for chapel to worship in song and hear an encouraging message from God's Word. This time allows them to step outside the classroom and engage with panel discussions, sermons, and Q&A sessions. Guest speakers range from well-known pastors, athletes, and artists to local pastors and TKA teachers, creating a meaningful time to both receive and respond in worship. Missions Trips In partnership with Hope Project International, TKA students have the opportunity to participate in multiple mission trips abroad, building homes for families in need. These life-changing experiences allow students to join God's work around the world while growing in faith and compassion. Each trip is meaningful, enriching, and fills within minutes of opening! Spiritual Emphasis TKA's Spiritual Emphasis Week offers students multiple opportunities to grow in their faith and experience Christ's love. The week includes morning worship, lunch-time Bible studies, a local church fair, and two chapel days featuring nationally known speakers. It concludes with students serving the community through local service projects that extend the love of Christ. Everyone is invited to join us for our fall and spring Family Nights of Worship. Bring the whole family for a great time of fellowship and worship led by our very own TKA praise team! See You at the Pole is a global, student-led prayer event held annually on the fourth Wednesday of September. It began in 1990 with ten students praying at their school and has since grown to include millions worldwide. Our TKA family has joined this mission by gathering at our flagpole before classes to worship and pray for friends, families, teachers, schools, and nations. The advisory program at TKA seeks to further our school's mission to touch the hearts of students as we develop Christian leaders. It allows every secondary student to build a mentoring relationship with a TKA staff or faculty member for spiritual growth. In these groups, students encourage one another, share their thoughts, and grow together in faith and community. Each May, The King's Academy participates in the National Day of Prayer, providing opportunities for the school community to come together in prayer. The day begins with a time of worship and prayer before school, followed by a campus-wide prayer walk led by faculty, staff, and students. Group 3:16 Every other week, students can join a student-led Bible study called Group 3:16, which began with a small group of students and continues to grow each year. Divided by grade level, students study material relevant to their stage of life and hear devotionals from teachers, peers, and local pastors. It's a meaningful opportunity for fellowship, prayer, and spiritual growth with friends. 3:16 Mentoring Mentorship and discipleship are at the heart of TKA's mission. The "3:16 Mentoring" program connects senior Prefect leaders with 6th-8th grade students to build meaningful relationships. Meeting twice per quarter during lunch, Prefects lead discussions that encourage, guide, and support younger students in their faith and personal growth.
