Cleveland Middle School Splits 6th Grade Athletics

Cleveland Middle School Splits 6th Grade Athletics From Upper Grades

Cleveland Middle School will separate 6th grade athletics from 7th and 8th grade programs beginning in the 2027 school year, shifting focus to skill development over competition.

The restructuring addresses declining participation as students advance through the middle school grades. Coaches, students, and families informed the decision after school officials reviewed participation data.

The new 6th grade program emphasizes fundamental skills and allows students to sample multiple sports: football, cross country, softball, basketball, wrestling, baseball, and track. Competition against other schools will continue but as a secondary priority.

Families may request 7th grade placement for students they believe are ready for advanced competition. Coaches will evaluate skill readiness, physical maturity, and individual benefit. Not all requests will be approved.

Incoming 6th graders must obtain a physical from their primary care provider before participating. School physicals do not meet the timing requirements for fall sports. Some sports require specialized equipment purchases, and playing time is not guaranteed.

Cleveland Middle School hosts a parent information meeting Wednesday, May 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cleveland Event Center. Families can complete a survey about their student's athletic interests through a QR code or link provided by the school.

Summer Pride, an athlete orientation, begins June 1 at 8:45 a.m. behind the Event Center. All incoming 6th graders with current physicals planning to participate are invited.
