Pinellas County Utilities began its annual water system maintenance program on Monday, Sept. 21. The routine procedure, scheduled to conclude Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, involves a temporary switch from chloramine to free chlorine disinfection. This change optimizes water quality and reduces the potential for bacteria in the distribution system.
Residents throughout Pinellas County, from Tarpon Springs to St. Pete Beach, may notice a slight difference in the taste or smell of their tap water. Pinellas County Utilities assures the public the water remains safe to drink and meets all federal and state standards. This disinfection change is a proactive measure to maintain a healthy water supply.
The program serves as an effective alternative to flushing large volumes of water, contributing to enhanced water quality monitoring and reduced flushing needs. While the general population will not experience adverse health effects, individuals who use kidney dialysis machines should contact their dialysis care provider for specific guidance. Chlorine, like chloramine, can be fatal if it enters the bloodstream during hemodialysis.
Fish owners with existing systems for removing chloramine from their water should not be affected. For those with water treatment devices, Pinellas County Utilities recommends following the manufacturer's specifications. The program affects all water customers of Pinellas County Utilities.
Residents with questions can contact Public Works at 727-588-3795. The Town of Belleair website will announce any changes to the program's duration.
