Clay County residents are advised to prepare for tropical storm-force winds and significant flooding as a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Jackson MS, effective October 9 at 4:09 AM CDT.

A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm-force winds, reaching 39 to 57 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, are possible within the next 48 hours. Property protection efforts should now be underway. Secure unanchored items, and be aware of potential damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect many large tree limbs to break and some trees to snap or uproot, leading to possible road impassability and scattered power outages. Complete all preparations before winds become hazardous.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Peak rainfall amounts of 2-4 inches, with locally higher amounts, are expected. This could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and floodwaters could enter some structures. Residents in flood-prone areas should consider protective actions. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life.

The NWS indicates tornadoes are not expected at this time. This Tropical Storm Watch is effective until October 9, 2026, at 12:15 PM UTC.
