A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Clay County, issued by the NWS, expecting tropical storm-force winds and significant flooding potential; residents should prepare now for hazardous conditions.

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Clay County, effective immediately as of October 9 at 1:00 PM CDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS. This warning indicates that tropical storm-force winds are expected within the area within the next 36 hours. Residents should complete all preparations for hazardous wind conditions now.

Peak wind forecasts predict 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with the potential for winds between 39 to 57 mph. Limited damage to property such as porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect many large tree limbs to break, and some trees may snap or be uprooted. Scattered power and communications outages are also anticipated. Driving conditions may become hazardous due to debris and on elevated roadways.

A Flood Watch is also in effect for Clay County. The NWS forecasts 2-4 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts, leading to a potential for moderate flooding. Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and small streams, creeks, canals, and ditches could overflow. Floodwaters may enter some structures or weaken foundations, and several areas could experience rapid inundation at underpasses and low-lying spots. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life.

The NWS indicates the situation is unfavorable for tornadoes, and none are expected. However, gusty winds may still occur with showers and thunderstorms. This warning expires October 9 at 9:00 PM UTC.
