CLAY COUNTY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Clay County, effective immediately as of October 9 at 10:31 PM CDT. This warning indicates severe conditions are expected, and residents should act now to complete preparations.

Peak winds are forecast to be 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Residents should plan for hazardous wind of equivalent tropical storm force and complete efforts to protect property before winds become dangerous. Limited damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible, along with downed tree limbs and scattered power outages.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 1-3 inches of rain expected, with locally higher amounts. This could lead to moderate rainfall flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and flood waters could enter structures or weaken foundations. Residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions and heed all flood watches and warnings. Failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life.

The NWS indicates that tornadoes are not expected at this time. The Tropical Storm Warning is set to expire on October 10, 2026, at 6:45 AM UTC (1:45 AM CDT).
