AMVETS Moves HQ to Washington, PA After 80 Years

Staff Writer
June 16, 2026
AMVETS moves national headquarters to Washington after 80 years in D.C.

AMVETS relocated its national headquarters to Washington, Pennsylvania, ending 80 years in the Washington, D.C., area. The veterans service organization completed the move in 2025 and held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 7, 2026, at 265 North Avenue.

Washington County has the highest per capita veteran population in the continental United States. The organization purchased a former synagogue for $525,000 in June 2024 and renovated it through 2025.

The exploratory process began in 2023 under National Commander Don McLean. The National Executive Committee approved the relocation in June 2024 under National Commander Bill Clark. Construction proceeded under National Commander Horace Johnson.

"In moving to Washington County, we are moving to our fellow veterans," Horace Johnson, AMVETS National Commander during construction, said during the ceremony.

The organization cited the county's central location, lower cost of living compared to the D.C. area, and community reception as factors in the decision. AMVETS is now hiring for positions including an executive assistant at the new location.
