Stroke Warning Signs: Citrus County Health Guide
The Florida Department of Health in Citrus County is marking National Stroke Awareness Month in May by teaching residents how to identify stroke symptoms and understand their risk factors.
Stroke ranks among the nation's leading causes of death. Quick medical treatment reduces brain damage and improves survival rates, the department says.
Health officials recommend the F.A.S.T. method to spot stroke symptoms: Face drooping on one side, inability to raise both arms, and slurred speech or difficulty understanding simple sentences. Call 911 immediately if any symptom appears.
High blood pressure, excessive alcohol use, physical inactivity, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and heart disease increase stroke risk. The department recommends residents eat a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, exercise regularly, avoid tobacco, and limit alcohol consumption to lower their risk.
