A new documentary exploring the life and artistry of late Rush drummer Neil Peart will premiere on Canada's CBC network on September 23. Titled "Neil Peart: No One's Disciple," the film from Banger Films traces Peart's journey from his early performances to his acclaimed work as a lyricist and percussionist.
Peart, who died in 2020 at age 67 following a private battle with glioblastoma, remains one of rock music's most influential drummers. The documentary features newly filmed rehearsal sessions with surviving Rush members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson. They perform signature Rush tracks with guest drummers Danny Carey of Tool, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Stewart Copeland of The Police.
Carey and Smith previously joined Lee and Lifeson for a 2022 tribute concert. This marks the first time Copeland, a longtime friend of Peart, has played with the Rush founders.
In addition to the music, "Neil Peart: No One's Disciple" includes conversations between Lee and Lifeson. Prominent drummers also analyze Peart's technique and musical impact. Archival recordings capture Peart discussing his dedication to drumming. In one archival interview, Peart stated, "I think it matters for me to play better all the time, and to play my best all the time, to keep it fresh and changing. It’s kind of my responsibility, I see it, as a drummer."
Following its Canadian television debut, the documentary will be available internationally through distribution outlets and streaming platforms.
