Heat Advisory Issued: Heat Index Up To 110 Degrees Expected Wednesday

Residents in portions of central Mississippi, southeast Arkansas, and northeast Louisiana should prepare for a Heat Advisory in effect from 11 AM to 7 PM CDT on Wednesday, September 16. The National Weather Service in Jackson, MS, has issued this advisory due to expected heat index values reaching up to 110 degrees.

The affected areas include Ashley, Chicot, Morehouse, West Carroll, East Carroll, Richland, Madison, Franklin, Catahoula, Tensas, and Concordia parishes in Louisiana; Bolivar, Sunflower, Leflore, Grenada, Carroll, Montgomery, Webster, Clay, Lowndes, Choctaw, Oktibbeha, Washington, Humphreys, Holmes, Attala, Issaquena, Sharkey, Yazoo, Madison, Warren, Hinds, Rankin, Claiborne, Copiah, Simpson, Jefferson, Adams, Franklin, Lincoln, Lawrence, Jefferson Davis, and Marion counties in Mississippi.

Hot temperatures and high humidity pose a risk of heat-related illnesses. The National Weather Service advises everyone to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors. When outdoors, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours.

Take action immediately if you observe symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. For those working outdoors, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. If someone is overcome by heat, move them to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is a medical emergency—call 911 immediately.
