Residents in Western Chippewa County should seek shelter indoors immediately due to strong thunderstorms. The National Weather Service in Gaylord, MI, issued a Special Weather Statement today, October 6, 2026, at 4:56 PM EDT, which remains effective until 5:30 PM EDT.
Doppler radar at 4:56 PM EDT indicated strong thunderstorms moving east at 45 mph. These storms extend from near Lower Tahquamenon Falls State Park to near Hulbert. The primary hazards include wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea-sized hail. These conditions could result in downed tree limbs and unsecured objects being blown around. Minor damage to vegetation from hail is also possible.
Areas impacted include Paradise, Whitefish Point, Point Iroquois, Bay Mills, Hulbert, Eckerman, Bayview Campground, Strongs, Raco, Lower Tahquamenon Falls State Park, Mackinaw Lake, and Platt Lake. If you are outdoors in these areas, consider seeking shelter inside a building until the statement expires.
