Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Chilton County; Prepare for High Winds, Major Flooding
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Chilton County, including Clanton, with residents urged to shelter immediately due to expected high winds and prepare for major flooding.
A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Chilton County, including Clanton, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, effective immediately as of October 9 at 9:56 PM CDT. This warning indicates severe conditions are expected, with the NWS urging residents to complete all last-minute preparations.
Residents should now shelter from dangerous winds, which are forecast to reach 25-35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. There is a potential for winds between 58 and 73 mph, which could cause significant damage. The NWS states that the main wind event impacts are currently unfolding.
In addition to high winds, a Flood Watch remains in effect for the area. An additional 1-3 inches of rain is expected, with locally higher amounts possible, leading to a potential for major flooding. Emergency plans should include the possibility of evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may overflow, and small streams could become dangerous. Many structures within communities could be impacted by floodwaters, making some uninhabitable. Driving conditions will become hazardous with numerous road and bridge closures possible.
Tornadoes are not expected, according to the NWS, though gusty winds and thunderstorms may still occur. The Tropical Storm Warning is effective until October 10 at 6:00 AM UTC. For more information and safety resources, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
