Residents in Chatham, Durham, Harnett, Lee, Orange, and Wake counties are advised to seek shelter immediately. The National Weather Service in Raleigh has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning effective until 11:45 AM EDT today, October 11.

At 11:06 AM EDT, severe thunderstorms were detected along a line extending from 8 miles south of Mebane to near Sanford, moving east at 45 mph. The primary hazard is 60 mph wind gusts, which could cause damage to roofs, siding, and trees. This warning includes Raleigh, North Carolina State Fairgrounds, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill, Sanford, Pittsboro, Garner, Carrboro, Fuquay-Varina, and Angier.

Impacted highways include I-85 (MM 175-181), I-40 (MM 263-298), I-440 (MM 1-7), I-540 (MM 0-10), US 1 (MM 69-101), and the Durham Freeway (MM 2-15).

Seek shelter in a sturdy structure until the storm passes. Stay away from windows due to potential flying debris. A Tornado Watch remains in effect for central North Carolina until 5:00 PM EDT.
