Rip Current Warning for Coastal Georgia and South Carolina
A Rip Current Statement has been issued for coastal Georgia and South Carolina, warning of dangerous rip currents through Saturday evening, October 10th; NWS advises swimming near lifeguards and provides safety instructions for those caught in a current.
Coastal residents and visitors in Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, and McIntosh counties in Georgia, as well as Beaufort and Coastal Jasper counties in South Carolina, are advised to exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston, SC.
Dangerous rip currents are expected through Saturday evening, October 10th. This statement was issued today, October 9th, at 8:35 PM EDT and is effective until 8:00 PM EDT on October 10th.
Rip currents pose a significant risk, capable of carrying even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper waters. To minimize risk, the NWS advises swimming only near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not attempt to swim directly against the current. Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline. If escape is not possible, face the shore and signal for help by calling out or waving your arms.
