Strong Thunderstorms with 50 mph Winds Impacting Central NC
A Special Weather Statement has been issued for central North Carolina due to strong thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 50 mph, impacting multiple counties and major highways until 12:45 PM EDT. Seek shelter indoors if outdoors.
Residents in Person, Granville, Alamance, Orange, Durham, Chatham, Wake, and Lee counties should prepare for strong thunderstorms. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Raleigh issued a Special Weather Statement at 11:43 AM EDT today, October 11, 2026, valid until 12:45 PM EDT.
Doppler radar at 11:42 AM EDT tracked a cluster of strong thunderstorms moving northeast at 30 mph. These storms are along a line extending from near Hillsborough to 6 miles south of Sanford. The primary hazard is wind gusts up to 50 mph, which could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.
Areas expected to be impacted include Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill, Oxford, Roxboro, Hillsborough, Creedmoor, Pittsboro, and Wake Forest. This also includes major highways such as portions of I-85, I-40, I-440, I-540, US 1, and the Durham Freeway.
The NWS advises that if you are outdoors, you should consider seeking shelter inside a building. Doppler radar has indicated rotation within these storms. Should any of the storms intensify and rotation strengthen, a warning may be issued. A Tornado Watch remains in effect for central North Carolina until 5:00 PM EDT.
