City of Lyons Shares Updates on Projects, Includes New Playground at Faison Park

As many know, since Hurricane Helene, much has changed. While the storm reshaped parts of our community, we have remained committed to coming back stronger and that work is well underway. At Partin Park, improvements include rebuilding the Big Green Monster as a metal structure designed to better withstand future storms, adding additional parking, removing dangerous trees, leveling areas at the upper deck playground, and removing the damaged concession stand near Field 4. We are also constructing a new 12-stall public restroom adjacent to the Birthday House. In addition, 20 AI-powered and access cameras are being installed at both Partin Park and Vincent Faison Park to enhance safety.Following Hurricane Helene, the City Gym was lost and will be torn down soon, and demolition of the Callaway Center is already in progress. Our City Council has been intentional about ensuring that what we rebuild will better serve our community for generations to come.We also shared updates on Vincent Faison Park, where new playground equipment is being installed, pickleball courts are coming soon, and progress continues on the community center. We look forward to hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the near future.Main Street was also highlighted, as our Community Development Director, Jessica Barfield, shared exciting upcoming events including Tales of the Altamaha and more Live Nights in Lyons featuring music at the Society 304 Gardens. We encourage everyone to stop by the Main Street office to learn more about upcoming events and ways to get involved.

Lyons Celebrates Reading Week at Head Start

"The City of Lyons was honored to be invited by Robert Tillman, Coalition Coordinator for Safe Kids Toombs, to participate in Reading Across America Week at Toombs Head Start. Throughout the week, city staff had the opportunity to visit classrooms and spend time reading with the students, creating meaningful moments with some of the community’s youngest learners. Each visit brought laughter, wonderful stories from the children, and plenty of sweet hugs. City Manager Jason Hall had a blast reading with the students, along with Community Development Director Jessica Barfield McCoy, who enjoyed sharing stories and spending time with the children. Near the end of the week, Assistant City Clerk Chaquandra Hudson joined the fun and was welcomed with open arms—some students even asked if she could come back and visit again. The City of Lyons was overjoyed to participate in the many opportunities to read with students during the week and to be part of such a positive experience in the community. Supporting literacy and connecting with young readers is an important part of building a strong future for our city. The City extends its sincere thanks to Toombs Head Start for welcoming us into their classrooms and to Safe Kids Toombs for the invitation. We are proud to be part of a community that celebrates learning and encourages a love of reading among our littlest residents."

Story Time at City Hall with Mayor NeSmith

"We had such a wonderful time hosting Story Time at City Hall with our special guest, Mayor Willis NeSmith! It was truly an afternoon full of smiles, laughter, and the joy of reading together.Mayor NeSmith made the event extra special by spending the afternoon with us, sharing in the fun and helping bring the story to life. The children were so excited to have him there, and it was heartwarming to see their enthusiasm as they gathered to listen and participate. Each child received a copy of Georgia Caroline Visits City Hall, which made the day even more memorable. Watching their faces light up as they received their very own book was priceless! We hope this story will continue to spark their curiosity about local government and encourage a lifelong love of reading. To make the afternoon even sweeter, our amazing Assistant City Clerk, Chaquandra Hudson, treated everyone to a little candy. It was the perfect finishing touch to an already delightful event. We are so grateful for the opportunity to host events like this that bring our community together. A big thank you to Mayor NeSmith for spending the afternoon with us and to everyone who joined in the fun. We can’t wait to host our next Story Time at City Hall!  "
