Douglas County Recognizes Crime Victims' Rights Week 2026

Douglas County Commissioners passed a resolution recognizing National Crime Victims' Rights Week, observed April 19-25, 2026, in partnership with the 23rd Judicial District Attorney, Sheriff Darren Weekly, and advocacy organizations From Silenced to Saved and Covered Colorado.
Sheriff Darren Weekly said law enforcement must prioritize how it treats victims, not just arrests. "We are joined by agencies across the country to reaffirm our commitment to victims in our community, and to ensure that they are not an afterthought in our criminal justice system," he said.
From Silenced to Saved Executive Director Jenelle Goodrich said the week's theme, "Listen, Act, Advocate," reflects how healing begins when survivors are believed. Covered Colorado, which supports sex trafficking survivors, Development Director Heather Johnson called the county's recognition a statement that victims' voices matter.
Commissioner Abe Laydon said the county increased funding this year for Internet Crimes Against Children prosecutors and additional detectives. 23rd Judicial District Attorney George Brauchler said justice requires compassion and dignity for those harmed and a commitment to support victims and their families.
Community members can participate by attending awareness events, sharing information on social media, and supporting local victim advocacy organizations.
