Wyoming's Powder River Basin Coal Exports Surge to 5-Year Peak
Wyoming coal companies in the Powder River Basin notched a five-year high in exports through late 2025, extending a U.S. export rally driven by Asian demand, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Production in the basin, centered in Campbell County hubs like Gillette, is forecast to contribute significantly to national totals of 230 million short tons for 2025, with MSHA data showing 172.2 million short tons through the third quarter at an annualized rate of 229.6 million short tons. Major operators including Peabody Energy and Arch Resources, with flagship mines like Black Thunder and North Antelope Rochelle, secured deals targeting China, India, Japan and South Korea, revitalizing an industry battered by 15 years of domestic declines.
The export boom supports 1,000 construction jobs tied to mine expansions and infrastructure upgrades, as reported initially by WyoFile. Tightening supply constraints are poised to lift PRB coal prices further into 2026, with steady demand offsetting wind and solar growth in the Midcontinent, per Argus Media. University of Wyoming energy economist Rob Godby notes PRB's edge stems from its low-cost, low-quality thermal coal, keeping it competitive even as global giants ramp up coal power. Shipments via Pacific terminals, including expansions at British Columbia's Ridley and Westshore, are key to reaching Asia at 40% below recent Chinese price peaks.
With recoverable reserves exceeding 108 billion short tons in Wyoming and Montana—enough for 194 years at current rates—the basin remains the nation's top coal producer, supplying 43% of U.S. output as of 2019. This resurgence counters years of drops, from over 400 million tons annually to half that recently, offering economic relief to communities from Wright to Rozet. As of early 2026, the sector eyes sustained growth amid global shifts.
