Strong Thunderstorm Warning: Seek Shelter, Avoid Flooded Roads

A Special Weather Statement has been issued for Natrona County Lower Elevations by the National Weather Service (NWS) Riverton, WY, effective immediately until 7:00 PM MDT tonight, September 19, 2026. Residents are advised to seek shelter indoors and avoid driving through flooded roadways.

At 6:22 PM MDT, Doppler radar detected a strong thunderstorm near Powder River, approximately 31 miles northwest of Casper. This storm is tracking east at 20 mph.

Hazards include wind gusts up to 40 mph, penny-sized hail, and accumulating small hail. Gusty winds could damage tree limbs and displace unsecured objects. Minor damage to vegetation from hail is possible.

The thunderstorm is expected to impact Goldeneye Reservoir around 6:40 PM MDT.

Torrential rainfall accompanying this storm may lead to localized flooding. Do not attempt to drive through flooded roads. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is also occurring; lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
