CFCC Student Graduates While Raising Three Children

Alexis Tellez-Rivas will graduate this month from Cape Fear Community College's Adult High School program after four years of juggling coursework, employment and childcare. She has two children at home and expects a third this summer.
Tellez-Rivas started the program in 2021 and completed her final class this spring. She wants her children to see that education remains within reach despite life's obstacles.
"I'm happy because a lot of things have happened in my life," Tellez-Rivas said. "To achieve this, it's one thing I get to show my children. No matter how long it takes, you still have time."
CFCC nominated Tellez-Rivas this spring for the Dallas Herring Achievement Award, which honors an early advocate for North Carolina's community college system and recognizes students who meet challenges and reach their potential.
Tellez-Rivas plans to pursue accounting and finance after graduation.
CFCC's Adult High School program serves working adults and parents who need flexible schedules to complete their high school education. Residents interested in enrollment can visit cfcc.edu/academic-career-readiness/adult-high-school for information and requirements.
