MTPD Officers Honored for Helping Elderly Resident
Corporal Shawn Karge and Officer Tom Runyon received the April 2026 Employee of the Month award for helping an elderly resident after a February blizzard left her without power for four days.
On February 23, Helen M. Baker's cousin called Middle Township Police for a wellness check. Officer Runyon arrived first, informed Baker about emergency housing and charging stations, then shoveled her walkway. Corporal Karge joined him, and together they cleared snow from her car, leveled surrounding snow, and moved her vehicle closer to the road.
Baker sent a handwritten letter to the Township. "After the blizzard, I was courteously and friendly helped by Officer Runyon and Corporal Karge," she wrote. "It made me feel safe and so thankful for their concern."
"These officers exemplify the dedication and community spirit we value in Middle Township," Mayor Chris Leusner said. "Their willingness to go above and beyond during challenging conditions reflects the highest standards of public service."
The Township Committee will formally recognize the officers at its May 4 meeting. Baker has been invited to attend.
Karge joined the department in 2012 and became a permanent officer in 2014. Runyon joined in 2017 and earned permanent status that same year. The Employee of the Month program recognizes municipal employees for outstanding dedication and service. Residents and employees can submit nominations through the Township website or Administration Office.
