Lee County Schools Arts Programs Flourish

Students across Lee County Schools are experiencing a vibrant arts education, with programs in visual arts, music, theater and dance flourishing. The School District of Lee County has maintained and expanded its arts offerings, fostering creativity and critical thinking for its nearly 100,000 students.

Dr. Jason Thomashefsky, assistant director of arts, athletics and activities for the district, highlighted the extensive opportunities. "We provide more arts education than all the area’s private schools combined," Thomashefsky said. Middle and high schools offer all four major arts disciplines, including comprehensive band, choir and orchestra programs. Theater productions are increasing, dance programs rank among Florida’s largest, and every school employs at least one full-time visual arts teacher.

Student achievements demonstrate the programs' success. Over 50 Lee County students earned spots in the Florida Music Educators Association’s All-State ensembles this past year, with all 21 middle schools represented in the all-county band. More than 70 schools participated in the River District Art Walk in April, showcasing student work in downtown Fort Myers alongside local artists. Participation in the High School Musical Theatre Awards reached a decade-long high. In its second year, 250 students earned Florida’s fine arts seal on their diplomas.

Thomashefsky emphasized that budget changes did not eliminate any arts programs. Instead, the district added positions, including a second dance and theater teacher at a growing high school and a full-time chorus teacher. Orchestra enrollment has grown significantly, from approximately 600 students to nearly 3,000 since Thomashefsky began his role.

"Arts, athletics and activities are what keep kids excited to come to school," Thomashefsky said. He stressed the importance of arts education for developing essential skills and fostering a lifelong appreciation for the arts, regardless of a student's career path. Partnerships with organizations like the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center, ArtFest Fort Myers and Florida Repertory Theatre provide support through performance spaces, gallery opportunities and resources.

Thomashefsky encouraged parents to enroll their children in arts classes, noting the profound impact these experiences can have. The district's five-year vision includes doubling arts program enrollment and establishing Lee County as a model for arts education in Florida.
