Lee County Property Owners Face Tax Penalties

Properties with unpaid real estate taxes risk a tax certificate being issued by May 1, establishing a first lien. Two years after delinquency, a tax certificate holder can seek a tax deed, potentially leading to government ownership and a public auction.
Tangible personal property taxes also became delinquent April 1, with added interest and fees. Owners receive a mailed reminder notice detailing these costs. Accounts unpaid by May 1 go to Revenue Recovery Solutions, Inc., for collection, incurring further vendor fees. A list of delinquent tangible personal property taxpayers runs in a local newspaper, with advertising costs added to the bill.
According to Florida Statute 197.413, the Tax Collector issues tax warrants by April 30 of the following year for unpaid tangible personal property taxes. The Tax Collector may also pursue a court order to seize property to cover unpaid taxes and costs.
Property owners with at least $40 in delinquent taxes can apply for a payment plan. To apply for the Delinquent Tangible Payment Plan, email [email protected].
