Cape Coral residents renewing Florida driver licenses or identification cards may need to visit a Lee County Tax Collector (LCTC) service center in person, depending on their specific circumstances. Renewals must occur by the card's expiration date.
Driver licenses can be renewed up to 18 months before expiration. ID cards and Commercial Driver Licenses (CDLs) with HazMat endorsements must be renewed within 12 months of expiration.
An in-person visit is mandatory if a resident has changed their name since their last renewal, if their previous renewal was completed online or by mail, if their driver license status shows "Temporary," or if they need to change their immigration status. Licenses expired for more than 12 months also require an in-person renewal.
Appointments are recommended for these in-person services. CDL HazMat endorsements require a specific appointment type.
Residents who have changed their address online since their last in-person visit must bring two proofs of their current address to their next appointment, even if their license or ID is Real ID compliant. If none of the above conditions apply, renewal can typically be completed online through the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles' MyDMV Portal. Even with online renewals, a subsequent in-person visit will require two proofs of residency if an address change was made online.
Replacing a lost or stolen credential, or updating information such as name, address, or citizenship status, involves specific procedures. Replacements can often be done online, with credentials arriving by mail within one to three weeks. Those reporting stolen credentials must file a report with local law enforcement; a police report may be necessary for replacement. Name changes must first be updated with the Social Security Administration before visiting an LCTC office. Citizenship status changes require an in-person visit with current U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) documentation.
