Bay County's stroke death rate has reached its highest level in nearly two decades, prompting local medical professionals to increase awareness and enhance care. This spike contrasts with Florida's overall stroke death rate, which remained steady in 2024.
The increasing number of stroke cases directly impacts local healthcare resources and highlights a critical public health concern for residents. Bay Medical Center alone recorded between 600 and 700 stroke cases last year, a progressively increasing number. This situation underscores the need for improved pre-hospital care and community education to mitigate the severe consequences of strokes.
Dr. Muhammad Khan, Stroke Director at Bay Medical Center, emphasized the urgency of treatment, stating, "Time is brain, and the sooner you come, the better it is." To address this, Ascension Sacred Heart Bay hosted a symposium for EMS providers in Bay County and surrounding areas. Olivia Flynn, a Nurse Practitioner at Ascension Sacred Heart Bay, explained the symposium focused on stroke education and the importance of pre-hospital care and patient transition to the hospital.
Medical experts advocate for the "BE FAST" acronym to help the public quickly identify stroke symptoms. This acronym stands for Balance issues, Eyesight changes, Facial drooping, Arm weakness, and Speech difficulties. The 'T' in BE FAST signifies "Time to call 911." Hospital leaders plan additional symposiums for both the community and medical professionals to further spread this vital information. A mobile stroke unit is also expected to be operational by next summer, aiming to provide faster care to rural communities.
