Escambia County Fire Rescue Observes National Fire Prevention Week Oct. 4-10

Escambia County Fire Rescue Observes National Fire Prevention Week Oct. 4-10 Escambia County Fire Rescue invites residents to join in observing National Fire Prevention Week 2026, which runs from Oct. 4-10. This year's theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower,” focusing on everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires. Everyday electronics, including smartphones, power tools, laptops, and toys, use lithium-ion batteries. If damaged or used incorrectly, these batteries can overheat, catch fire, or explode. Safe charging habits can help prevent battery fires. Safe Ways to Charge It’s important to charge your devices on a hard, flat surface, such as a table, desk, or floor. Devices and chargers generate heat while they are charging. Soft surfaces, such as beds, pillows, and couches, can trap that heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat. Power tools, e-bikes, and other large outdoor devices should be charged outside when possible. These batteries are larger and store more energy, which can lead to larger fires if a battery fails. Buy and Use Tested Products Use the cord and charger that’s approved by the device’s manufacturer. Cheap or off-brand chargers may not meet important safety standards and could become fire hazards in your home. Look for a mark from a nationally recognized testing laboratory on the packaging and product. This means the item has met established safety standards. Nationally recognized testing laboratories include UL, ETL, or CSA. Signs to Unplug When a device is fully charged, unplug it. Leaving a device plugged in can increase stress on the battery and the chances of it overheating. If you notice your device swelling, smoking, or smelling strange, immediately stop using it. Disposing of or Recycling Old Batteries Lithium-ion batteries need to be recycled at a safe battery recycling location. You can find a nearby recycling location by visiting Call2Recycle.org. The National Fire Protection Association has been the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week since 1922. According to the National Archives and Records Administration's Library Information Center, Fire Prevention Week is the longest-running public health and safety observance on record. The President of the United States has signed a proclamation declaring a national observance during that week every year since 1925. Visit firepreventionweek.org for more safety information.

UF/IFAS Escambia Extension’s annual Peanut Butter Challenge kicks off today, Oct. 1, with donations accepted now through Friday, Nov. 20. Coordinated by UF/IFAS Extension and Florida A&M University Cooperative Extension, the food drive is a friendly competition among Florida counties to support local food pantries throughout the state. Community members are asked to bring unopened, unexpired peanut butter jars of any size to the following locations in Escambia County: Escambia County Administration – 221 Palafox Place, Fourth Floor Escambia County Public Safety – 6575 N. “W” St. Escambia Extension Office – 3740 Stefani Road Cordova Lanes – 2111 Airport Blvd. Epps Christian Center – 2300 N. Pace Blvd. Farm Bureau Insurance – 153 FL-97 First Baptist Church of Ferry Pass – 8350 Caminitti Lane Holy Spirit Catholic Church – 10650 Gulf Beach Highway Molino Library – 6450-A Highway 95A Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church – 9945 Hillview Drive Perdido Bay Methodist Church – 13660 Innerarity Point Road St. Mary Catholic Church – 401 Van Pelt Lane Escambia Extension ranked in first place throughout the state for total number of jars collected in the 2025 Peanut Butter Challenge, with 4,214 jars collected from donations throughout Escambia County. Read more about the 2025 Peanut Butter Challenge here. “We’re excited to participate in this year’s Peanut Butter Challenge,” Escambia Extension Services Director Nick Simmons said. “Escambia County had incredible support from our community last year, and I hope to bring that same momentum to this year’s challenge. We encourage everyone who can to participate and help spread the word about the importance of peanut butter for our local food banks.” In addition to its nutritional value and long shelf life, peanut butter was originally selected as the donation item as a way to highlight Florida’s peanut productions. Peanuts, especially those grown for peanut butter, are a major crop in Florida, contributing over $168 million to the state’s economy in 2025. Along with the community donations, the Florida Peanut Producers Association and the Florida Peanut Federation, located in the northwest and northeast peanut-producing regions of Florida, will contribute to the totals distributed to food pantries in those regions. To participate in this year's Peanut Butter Challenge and support local food pantries, contact Escambia Extension at 850-475-5230. For more information about the Peanut Butter Challenge, visit sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/peanutbutter.
