Drivers in Edgecombe, Johnston, Wilson, Harnett, Wayne, Scotland, Hoke, Cumberland, and Sampson counties are advised to exercise extreme caution this morning due to developing dense fog. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Raleigh issued a Special Weather Statement at 1:39 AM EDT, effective until 5:00 AM EDT today, October 2, 2026.

The NWS reports that areas of dense fog will continue to develop and expand across the southern and central Coastal Plain and eastern Sandhills. The most widespread fog, with visibilities reduced to one-quarter mile or less, is expected in Scotland, Hoke, Cumberland, Sampson, Wayne, and Wilson Counties.

Motorists should allow extra driving time to reach their destinations, reduce driving speeds, increase following distances, and use only low beam headlights. These conditions are expected to persist until 5:00 AM EDT.
