CALLAWAY – Residents of Callaway seeking clarity on the city’s waste collection services can find detailed information regarding trash, bulk waste, and yard waste pickup procedures on the City of Callaway’s official website. The city provides weekly trash collection for all residential accounts, emphasizing its importance in maintaining a cleaner, safer environment and protecting local water bodies.
The City of Callaway is responsible for collecting items that cannot fit into a 96-gallon container. This includes general trash, bulk waste, and yard waste. However, construction debris is explicitly excluded from city pickup services.
Trash collection encompasses items such as bulk waste, yard waste, non-putrescible solid waste, and metal that exceed the capacity of standard garbage services or a 96-gallon container. Construction debris is not eligible for this service.
Bulk Waste includes larger items like appliances (with all CFCs removed), furniture, couches, mattresses, bicycles (tires removed), televisions, and swing sets. Again, construction debris is not accepted.
Yard Waste consists of vegetative matter from landscaping and minor land clearing. Tree limbs or trunks up to six feet in length and eight inches in diameter are also included. Leaves do not require bagging, but if bagged, the bags should not be tied. Yard waste must be in a separate pile, free of other debris, and kept clear of drainage ditches, structures, fences, mailboxes, vehicles, water meters, irrigation lines, and low-hanging utility lines.
For placement, all waste materials should be set out for collection no earlier than the day before the designated pickup day. Garbage containers must be removed within 24 hours after collection. Trash and yard waste need to be in separate piles. Trash should be neatly stacked along the street or alley right-of-way. Furniture and miscellaneous trash can be mixed, but metal items should be separated. Appliances must be in a separate pile with doors removed; they will not be collected if doors are attached. Household garbage must be secured in metal or hard plastic cans with lids, kept from public view, and stored away from facing a public road.
The maximum quantity for weekly trash collection is 3.5 cubic yards, not exceeding 1,000 pounds. Trash exceeding this limit will incur additional fees. Residents will be notified via a door hanger if their trash exceeds the maximum volume. Fees for excess bulk items can be paid before pickup or added to the next utility bill. Failure to address excessive trash may lead to code enforcement actions.
It is important to note that the City of Callaway does not provide household garbage collection services. Excluded waste includes items such as fuel tanks, commercial and industrial refuse, tires, construction debris (asphalt, concrete, soil, glass, lumber, etc.), hazardous materials, used oil, batteries, biohazardous waste, large dead animals, and stable matter.
For inquiries or to obtain an authorization form for excess bulk fees, residents can contact the Callaway Public Works Department at 324 S. Berthe Ave., Monday through Friday, between 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM. The department’s phone number is 850-871-1033.
