Canyon County Demands Caldwell Pay Fair Share of Prosecution Costs

Canyon County Prosecuting Attorney Chris Boyd announced May 26 that the office will seek proportionate cost-sharing from the City of Caldwell for misdemeanor prosecutions.
Idaho code requires cities to fund their own misdemeanor cases. Canyon County taxpayers currently pay $2.4 million annually for countywide misdemeanor prosecution. Caldwell generated 22.9% of that workload last year but reimbursed only 7%.
Caldwell owed $569,114 for its share last year. The city paid $350,425, leaving county taxpayers to cover the $218,689 gap.
Boyd cited Nampa as a model. "We worked with Nampa last year and they now do pretty reasonable cost-sharing with us," Boyd said. "I appreciate Caldwell's understanding that costs need to be fairly reimbursed."
