Due to last Friday's (July 3) severe weather event, a large tree limb broke and fell onto an overhead primary feed that serves the Victor Herbert, Signal Hill, Stevens Road areas, also affected was a bank of elevated step down transformers that provide power to the residents on the Peninsula Road and Buck Island. As a result of the damage, biodegradable FR3 transformer insulating oil leaked from the damaged equipment.  This oil is used to cool and insulate electrical transformers so that they can operate safely and reliably.Immediately following the incident, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Emergency Spill Response Team were notified and dispatched to the site to assess any potential environmental concerns.  They are working alongside Village personnel to ensure the appropriate containment, cleanup and monitoring measures are in place.  The spill has been contained and cleanup efforts are underway.  While the oil may remain visible for some time, residents and visitors may notice cleanup activities in the area as crews continue their work.Based on the initial assessment by the DEC and Emergency Spill Response, no significant environmental impacts to public health, wildlife, or surrounding vegetation are anticipated.  The Village of Lake Placid remains committed to protecting our natural resources and will continue working closely with state environmental officials until the cleanup is complete. We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding as our Department of Public Works and emergency response partners work to safely restore the area and reopen the Village Boat launch as soon as it is safe to do so.
