Hurricane Isaias is strengthening, prompting a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement for North and Central Georgia, with watches for strong winds, heavy rainfall, potential flooding, and tornadoes from Friday night through Sunday.

Residents across North and Central Georgia are urged to finalize emergency preparations as Hurricane Isaias strengthens in the Gulf. The National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City GA has issued a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement today, October 8, at 5:26 PM EDT, detailing expected widespread impacts from Friday night through Sunday.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Chattahoochee, Harris, Heard, Macon, Marion, Meriwether, Pike, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor, Troup, Upson, and Webster counties, where wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph are possible. Most of North Georgia is under a High Wind Watch, anticipating frequent gusts to 40 to 50 mph from early Saturday through early Sunday. These strong, prolonged winds, combined with saturated soils from heavy rain, could lead to power outages from downed trees and limbs. A Flood Watch is also in effect for the entire area, with 1 to 3 inches of rain expected, and localized amounts up to 5 inches, potentially causing flash flooding.

Additionally, a dangerous tornado event is possible across North and Central Georgia, particularly within outer rainbands from Saturday and potentially into Sunday morning. These tornadoes can develop quickly, including overnight hours. Have multiple ways to receive Tornado Warnings and be ready to shelter quickly. The NWS advises checking emergency plans and supply kits, securing property, and knowing your county for accurate updates. Follow all advice from local officials. The next update is expected around 9 PM tonight, October 8.
