The Two-Word Spell That Makes Blake’s Tiger Still Roar

William Blake’s “The Tyger” is famous for its questions, but its real magic may live in two unsettling words: “fearful symmetry.” Here’s how that tiny contradiction can sharpen your own writing today.

The Most Radical Gift You Can Give Is Your Full Attention

Simone Weil thought attention was more than concentration: it was an ethical act, a way of treating another person’s existence as worthy of your time. That idea becomes startlingly practical when your phone is quietly begging to be worshipped.

Please Stop Turning Paintings Into Theme-Park Rides

The immersive art exhibit has officially reached the stage where the artwork is the least important thing in the room. I’m begging museums, producers, and giant projectors to let paintings be weird, quiet, and occasionally difficult again.

The new deadline to apply for federal disaster assistance is October 17, 2026. Individuals and families in Lewis, Pleasants, Ritchie, and Upshur counties who were affected by the July flooding may be eligible for federal disaster assistance. Residents can apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov, through the FEMA App, by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362, or by visiting a Disaster Recovery Center. The FEMA Helpline provides assistance in multiple languages. Disaster Recovery Centers in Lewis and Upshur counties will remain open through October 17 to provide in-person assistance. Centers are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Upshur County Development Authority and the former Summit Center in Weston.
