Rip Current Statement Issued for Coastal Areas Until Saturday Night
A Rip Current Statement has been issued for coastal areas of Nassau, Flagler, St. Johns, Glynn, and Camden counties until Saturday night, warning of dangerous rip currents.
Coastal residents and visitors in Nassau, Flagler, Northeast Coastal St. Johns, Southeast Coastal St. Johns, Coastal Glynn, and Coastal Camden counties should exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jacksonville, FL.
This statement is effective immediately, beginning October 9 at 2:34 AM EDT, and will remain in effect through late Saturday night, October 11, until 6:00 AM EDT. Dangerous rip currents are expected along all Southeast Georgia Beaches during this period.
Rip currents pose a significant danger, capable of sweeping even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper waters. The NWS advises specific safety measures:
- Swim only near a lifeguard.
- If caught in a rip current, remain calm, relax, and float.
- Do not attempt to swim directly against the current.
- If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the current.
- If you cannot escape, face the shore, wave your arms, and call for help.
Additionally, if travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
