Heat Index Up To 111°F Expected Today: Stay Hydrated, Seek Shade

BROWNSVILLE, TX – Residents in Brooks, Inland Kenedy, Starr, Southern Hidalgo, Inland Willacy, Inland Cameron, Coastal Kenedy, Northern Hidalgo, Coastal Willacy, and Coastal Cameron counties are advised to prepare for dangerously high heat index values today, September 29, 2026. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Brownsville has issued a Special Weather Statement, effective immediately until 7:00 PM CDT.

The NWS reports that the combination of hot temperatures and elevated humidity will result in heat index values between 108 and 111 degrees Fahrenheit for several hours this afternoon and into the evening. Some isolated locations may briefly experience heat index values exceeding 111 degrees.

Community members planning to spend time outdoors are urged to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and take frequent breaks from the heat. It is crucial that young children and pets are never left unattended in vehicles. These conditions can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses if precautions are not taken.
