Winter Storm Warning: Heavy Snow and Wind Expected Until Monday Morning

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for areas including East Glacier Park, Northern High Plains, and Southern Rocky Mountain Front until Monday morning, with heavy, wet snow and winds up to 45 mph expected to cause dangerous travel and potential power outages.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the East Glacier Park Region, Northern High Plains, Southern Rocky Mountain Front, Southern High Plains, Upper Blackfoot and MacDonald Pass, and Gates of the Mountains. Residents in these areas should prepare for heavy, wet snow and strong winds, which are expected to create hazardous conditions.

The warning is in effect from 10:40 PM MDT on October 10 until 6:00 AM MDT on Monday, October 12. The National Weather Service in Great Falls, MT, reports total snow accumulations between 10 and 20 inches, with isolated amounts approaching 30 inches in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The Lincoln valley is expected to receive up to 7 inches. Wind gusts could reach as high as 45 mph.

Travel could become very difficult due to the heavy snow and wind. The combination of gusty winds and wet, heavy snow may bring down tree branches, potentially leading to isolated power outages. Snowfall amounts will vary drastically, with accumulations on non-grassy surfaces mainly occurring from evening through late morning hours, especially at lower elevations.

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. For the latest road conditions, dial 5-1-1.
