Past Foodborne Illness Outbreaks Impacted Large Restaurant Chains

Large restaurant chains in the United States have faced foodborne illness outbreaks on multiple occasions. These incidents often draw significant attention because of the extensive customer base these establishments serve.

Chipotle Mexican Grill experienced multiple norovirus outbreaks in 2015, affecting various locations. A Boston-area restaurant linked to the chain caused illness in 143 Boston College students and other individuals. Health officials temporarily closed the restaurant following the incidents.

Jack in the Box encountered an Escherichia coli O157:H7 outbreak in 1993, which resulted in the deaths of four children and sickened hundreds. The outbreak led to the recall of 1.4 million pounds of ground beef. Jack in the Box implemented new protocols for meat cooking temperatures and received a fine from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In 1982, more than 40 people became ill from salmonella traced to milkshakes purchased at a McDonald's in Oregon. Health authorities identified the source as an ice cream machine contaminated with a raw egg mixture.

In 1978, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) faced a salmonella outbreak affecting 350 people across multiple states. Investigators traced the cause to contaminated fried chicken.

Taco Bell also experienced an E. coli O157:H7 outbreak in 2006, leading to illness in 71 people across five states. Officials linked the outbreak to contaminated lettuce and closed several Taco Bell restaurants temporarily.
