Wind Advisory Issued: Gusts Up To 60 MPH Expected Tonight
A Wind Advisory is in effect for multiple Western North Carolina counties until Sunday morning, with gusts up to 60 mph expected, potentially causing power outages and difficult travel.
Residents in Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Buncombe, Graham, Northern Jackson, Macon, Southern Jackson, and Transylvania counties should prepare for strong winds tonight. The National Weather Service (NWS) Greenville-Spartanburg SC has issued a Wind Advisory effective immediately, October 10 at 5:24 PM EDT, until Sunday, October 11 at 8:00 AM EDT.
For elevations above 3500 feet, a High Wind Warning is in effect, with southeast winds expected between 10 to 25 mph and gusts up to 60 mph. Below 3500 feet, the Wind Advisory predicts southeast winds of 5 to 20 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.
The NWS warns that damaging winds may blow down trees and power lines, particularly at higher elevations, leading to widespread power outages. Travel may be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. In lower elevations, gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects, and falling tree limbs may cause isolated power outages.
To ensure safety, the NWS advises remaining in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm and avoiding windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. If driving is necessary, use caution. For ongoing updates, tune into your local radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio.
