High Wind Warning Issued: Damaging Winds & Power Outages Expected
A High Wind Warning is in effect for multiple Western North Carolina counties from tonight until Sunday morning, with damaging winds up to 60 mph expected, leading to widespread power outages and difficult travel conditions.
Residents in Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Buncombe, Graham, Northern Jackson, Macon, Southern Jackson, and Transylvania counties are advised to prepare for a High Wind Warning, effective from midnight tonight, October 9, until 8 AM EDT Sunday, October 11. The National Weather Service (NWS) Greenville-Spartanburg SC has issued this warning, which indicates a severe threat.
For elevations above 3500 feet, east winds are expected to reach 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph. In lower elevations below 3500 feet, a Wind Advisory is in effect with east winds of 10 to 20 mph and gusts of 45 to 50 mph. These conditions are expected to cause damaging winds that will blow down trees and power lines, particularly in higher elevations. Widespread power outages are anticipated in these higher areas.
Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Gusty winds may also move unsecured objects and cause isolated power outages in lower elevations due to falling tree limbs. The NWS advises remaining in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm and avoiding windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs, and use caution if driving. Stay tuned to local radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio for further information.
