Strong Storm Threatens Young, Stephens Counties: Seek Shelter Now
A strong thunderstorm with 40+ mph winds and pea-sized hail is affecting Young and Stephens Counties; seek shelter indoors immediately. Affected areas include Hubbard Creek Reservoir and Breckenridge. The alert expires at 8:00 PM CDT.
A Special Weather Statement has been issued for parts of Young and Stephens Counties due to a strong thunderstorm. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Fort Worth reports that at 7:20 PM CDT, Doppler radar detected a strong thunderstorm seven miles east of Fort Griffin, moving southeast at 25 mph.
This storm poses hazards including winds in excess of 40 mph and pea-sized hail. Gusty winds may lead to downed tree limbs and unsecured objects being blown around. Minor damage to outdoor objects is also possible.
The NWS advises that if you are outdoors, you should seek shelter inside a building. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is also occurring with this storm. Remember, lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm; find safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
The storm is expected to impact Hubbard Creek Reservoir around 7:25 PM CDT and Breckenridge around 7:45 PM CDT. Other areas that may be affected include Eliasville, Eolian, and Murray. This Special Weather Statement is effective immediately and expires at 8:00 PM CDT tonight.
