Prepare for Heavy Snow: Winter Storm Watch Issued for Mountain Areas

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for mountain areas, with heavy wet snow and strong winds expected from Saturday evening through late Sunday night, potentially causing difficult travel and power outages. Residents should prepare now.

Residents and travelers in the Big Belt, Bridger, Castle, Gallatin, Madison County, and Centennial Mountains are advised to prepare for heavy wet snow. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Great Falls, effective from Saturday evening, October 10th, through late Sunday night, October 11th.

Forecasts indicate total snow accumulations between 6 and 12 inches are possible in the Big Belt Mountains, and 6 to 12 inches above 7000 feet in the mountains of Madison and Gallatin counties. Wind gusts could reach as high as 45 mph. These conditions may make travel very difficult, particularly over mountain passes, and backcountry conditions could become dangerous. The combination of wet snow and gusty winds has the potential to down tree limbs and power lines.

The NWS advises monitoring the latest forecasts for updates on this developing situation. This Winter Storm Watch is in effect until Monday, October 12th, at 6:00 AM MDT.
