SFWMD Waterway Permit Fees Updated for West Palm Beach

West Palm Beach residents and property owners seeking to make improvements along waterways, from the Intracoastal to neighborhood canals, will soon face a new fee structure for right-of-way occupancy permits. The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) updated its schedule, effective for applications submitted on or after Oct. 1, 2026.

The new schedule includes four categories for general permits, with fees ranging from no charge to $900, based on the project's type and scale. These permits are required for activities such as installing bulkheads, seawalls, docks, fences, landscaping, and clearing vegetation within the district's right-of-way.

For owners of single-family homes, many common projects like bulkheads, non-public docks, fences, gazebos, landscaping, and vegetation clearing will be free under Category NGP-1. However, existing, unpermitted facilities that would otherwise qualify for NGP-1 will incur a $75 fee under Category SP-1.

Homeowner and condominium associations will see different fees. Projects serving multiple dwelling units, such as bulkheads or docks, will generally fall under Category NGP-2 with a $150 fee. Existing, unpermitted facilities in this category will cost $300 under Category SP-2.

Developers, corporations, and government agencies will face higher fees. Category NGP-3 covers uses including temporary access, bulkheads, docks, fences, utility installations, and vegetation clearing for $300. Existing, unpermitted facilities in this category will be charged $625 under Category SP-3.

The highest fee category, NGP-4 at $900, applies to private and public vehicular, golf cart, and pedestrian bridges, excluding culvert bridges. Existing, unpermitted bridges in this category will also be charged $900 under Category SP-4.
