Data centers worldwide consume energy and water at scales matching medium-sized nations, researchers found in a new assessment of the computing infrastructure that powers the internet and artificial intelligence systems.

Data centers house servers, cooling systems, and networking equipment that operate continuously. Modern facilities consume megawatts of electricity, with some individual centers drawing power equivalent to small cities. Water demand varies by location and cooling method, with some centers consuming millions of gallons daily.

The growth trajectory concerns energy analysts and environmental researchers. Researchers project power consumption will rise substantially over the next several years.
