A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Holmes County, including Bonifay and Ponce De Leon, effective immediately, with tropical storm-force winds, major flooding, and several tornadoes expected within 36 hours; residents must complete all preparations now.
HOLMES COUNTY, FL – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Holmes County, effective immediately as of October 8 at 5:03 AM EDT. This warning means tropical storm-force winds are expected within the next 36 hours in affected areas including Bonifay and Ponce De Leon.
Residents in Holmes County must complete all preparations now. Plan for hazardous winds up to 15-25 mph with gusts to 35 mph, with a potential for 39-57 mph winds. Expect limited damage to property, including porches, awnings, and mobile homes, along with downed tree limbs and potential power outages. Secure all loose outdoor objects immediately.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 3-6 inches of rain anticipated, and locally higher amounts possible. This indicates a potential for major flooding, and residents in flood-vulnerable areas should strongly consider protective actions. Evacuations and rescues are likely, and rivers and small streams may rapidly overflow. Heed all flood watches and warnings.
The NWS also reports conditions are favorable for several tornadoes, with some potentially intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to a safe shelter before hazardous weather arrives. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. Significant impacts from tornadoes could include widespread damage, power loss, and communications failures.
