Spanish River Beach Swimming Banned Over Bacteria
The Florida Department of Health in Palm Beach County prohibited swimming at Spanish River Beach after water tests revealed elevated bacterial levels.
Health department staff detected enterococci bacteria at concentrations high enough to trigger a health advisory under state protocols. The park remains open for other activities, including picnicking and walking.
Officials will collect new water samples within 24 to 48 hours. If bacterial levels drop to safe ranges, the department will lift the swimming ban.
Enterococci bacteria indicate possible contamination from human or animal waste. Heavy rainfall, stormwater runoff, wildlife activity, and failing septic systems can elevate bacteria levels.
Swimming in contaminated water can cause gastrointestinal illness, skin infections, and respiratory problems. Children, elderly adults, and immunocompromised people face higher risk.
Anyone who swam before the advisory was issued should watch for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, or skin rashes. People with symptoms should contact a healthcare provider.
Spanish River Park, a 76-acre site along State Road A1A between Palmetto Park Road and Spanish River Boulevard, includes nature trails, picnic pavilions, and playground equipment.
Residents can check the Florida Healthy Beaches website or call the Palm Beach County Health Department for current water quality conditions.
