U.S. Navy to Support NASA's Artemis II Splashdown Recovery

The U.S. Navy is set to play a crucial role in the Artemis II mission, providing support for the safe return of the crew after splashdown. Naval assets, including specialized dive teams and the USS John P. Murtha, will be deployed to the recovery zone off the coast of San Diego.

Navy dive medical recovery teams have been training for various scenarios related to crew extraction and immediate medical support post-splashdown. These teams are composed of personnel with expertise in marine operations and emergency medical care.

The USS John P. Murtha, a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, will serve as a primary platform for recovery operations. Its capabilities include supporting flight operations and providing a staging area for personnel and equipment.

As a precautionary measure, a warning regarding potential space debris has been issued to ships operating in the area. This standard procedure is meant to minimize risks to maritime traffic during the recovery phase. Purdue University alumni will also be participating, aiding the Artemis team's safe return.
