Richard Dittner, 72, Black River Falls resident, passed away

Black River Falls lost a familiar face with the passing of Richard Brian “Dick” Dittner, 72, who died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, after a three-year battle with cancer. Dittner, a longtime resident of rural Black River Falls, was known for his dedication to his family and his work at Nelson Global.

Dittner was born on December 4, 1953, in Battle Creek, Michigan, to Rudolph and Pauline (Wood) Dittner. He spent his formative years in both Michigan and Wisconsin, attending Alma Center High School. In his younger days, Dittner worked in construction and at a truck stop in Michigan before finding his way to Dadco Pizza, where he met Kathryn Sterner, his future wife.

The couple married on May 2, 1992, in Black River Falls. Dittner famously chose his wedding day over fishing opener, a decision he reportedly never regretted, quipping that he knew where the best catch was. They made their home together in Black River Falls, where Dittner worked for Nelson Global as a material handler for 35 years.

Beyond his professional life, Dittner enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and meticulously landscaping his home. He cherished traveling with his family, including a memorable dream trip to Alaska. He also attended many concerts, enjoying performances by his favorite artists such as Alan Jackson, ZZ Top, John Fogerty, and George Thorogood.

Dittner is survived by his wife of 34 years, Kathryn Dittner; his four children, Michael Karraker, Melissa (Daniel) Nortman, Shelly (Matthew) Amidon, and Dustin (Carly) Dittner; and four grandchildren, Makayla (Aimane), Breanne, Tanner, and Olivia. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends. His parents preceded him in death.

A memorial service was held on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Torgerson Funeral Home in Black River Falls, with Pastor John Paul officiating. Visitation took place from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Burial followed at Brookside (Trump Coulee) Cemetery in rural Taylor. The family requested attendees wear camouflage clothing in memory of Dittner.
