Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Jefferson County: Prepare for Winds and Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Jefferson County, including Birmingham and Hoover, warning of potential hazardous winds up to 55 mph and moderate flooding beginning early Saturday morning.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Jefferson County, including the cities of Birmingham and Hoover, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, effective today, October 9, at 6:57 AM CDT. This watch indicates the potential for tropical storm conditions within the next 48 hours.
Residents should plan for hazardous winds of equivalent tropical storm force, with peak forecasts of 30-40 mph and gusts up to 55 mph. These winds are expected from early Saturday morning until Saturday morning. Damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect broken tree limbs, some snapped or uprooted trees, and scattered power and communication outages. Move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 1-3 inches of rainfall expected, and locally higher amounts. Moderate flooding is possible, which may prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and small streams, creeks, and ditches could overflow. Flood waters may enter some structures. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life. Consider protective actions if you are in an area vulnerable to flooding.
Tornadoes are not expected at this time, though showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. For more information, visit http://ready.gov/hurricanes.
